Dear Central Church,
“Hurry up and wait.” That was the advice my grandfather gave me as we were waiting in line to ride a roller coaster at a small theme park in Huntington, WV. It was the longest line I had ever seen, and I didn’t think we would ever reach the front. Just when I thought I couldn’t wait any longer, he encouraged me, “Don’t give up now…we’re almost there.”
The season of Advent is the church’s annual reminder, “We’re almost there.” The world is not the way it is supposed to be, but the arrival of Jesus means that hope, love, joy, and peace will have the last word of sin, injustice, disease, and death. The Apostle Peter writes this to a church on the verge of losing its patience:
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)
I’ve invited our friend, Samantha Chambo, to preach this Sunday. I believe God is giving her a word to help us learn how to wait and rest in the unfailing love of God. Samantha is a dedicated Bible teacher and preacher. She and her husband Fili are a vital part of Central Church. They are blessed with two amazing adult children, Tsakani and Emanuel.
Christ called her to preach in South Africa when she was only ten years old. She said a wholehearted yes and had never looked back since.
Samantha holds a PhD in Biblical studies from the University Manchester. She has served the Church of the Nazarene as a pastor, theological educator, compassionate ministry coordinator, and writer. Currently, she works at the Global Ministry Center in Clergy Education and Development. Her most recent project is the development of an online, video-based ministerial curriculum that will shape the development of pastors for decades to come.
I look forward to worshipping together as we continue this Advent season. Come quickly, Lord Jesus!
Until He’s Finished,
Pastor Mark
